France Reacts to Russia’s Willingness for Talks
This statement followed Russia’s favorable response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s call on Friday, in which he urged the EU to be prepared to “reengage” with Russia and hold discussions with President Vladimir Putin.
“It is welcome that the Kremlin has publicly agreed to this approach. We will decide in the coming days on the best way to proceed,” the French presidency said in its Sunday announcement.
Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Putin remains open to dialogue with his French counterpart. However, he stressed that such talks should not be used for one side “to read lectures” to the other, but must serve a clear purpose, according to a news agency.
“Putin is always ready to explain his positions in detail, sincerely and consistently,” Peskov added.
The last phone call between the Russian and French leaders took place in July, marking their first direct exchange since early 2022, when the Ukraine conflict intensified.
Macron’s renewed push to “reengage” with Russia came after an EU summit failed to reach consensus on a plan to use €210 billion ($246 billion) in frozen Russian assets as collateral for a proposed ‘reparations loan’ to Ukraine.
The initiative collapsed after months of debate, largely due to firm opposition from Belgium, which controls most of the immobilized funds.
