France Strongly Criticizes US Sanctions on ICC Judges
In its statement, the French Foreign Ministry noted that Paris had acknowledged the new sanctions, which add to those already applied against nine other ICC judges.
France declared it “condemns all forms of threats and coercive measures” aimed at the ICC, its personnel, and civil society groups supporting the court. The ministry argued that such actions represent an assault on the ICC itself and on the 125 nations that are parties to the Rome Statute.
“These measures are contrary to the principle of judicial independence,” the ministry emphasized, underscoring that the ICC must be allowed to carry out its responsibilities without political interference.
Paris also voiced solidarity with the judges affected by the sanctions and reiterated its “unwavering support” for the ICC and its staff.
The French government pledged to continue collaborating with European partners and other Rome Statute signatories to safeguard the court’s ability to operate impartially and autonomously.
On Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced sanctions against the two ICC judges, accusing them of being "directly engaged” in what he described as “the illegitimate targeting of Israel."
