Western France grapples with flooding as Storm Ingrid hits Brittany
Reports indicate that Finistere, Morbihan and Ille-et-Vilaine are still experiencing serious flood conditions, even though water levels have started to fall gradually after two days of intense rainfall.
Aerial footage aired by a television broadcaster showed extensive flooding along the Oust River in the town of Malestroit, in Morbihan, where floodwaters engulfed gardens and surrounded residential buildings.
Local officials reported that the Oust River reached a high point of 3.18 meters on Friday before beginning a slow decline. Meanwhile, the nearby Nantes canal, which typically stays below 50 centimeters, surged dramatically to 2.70 meters on Saturday.
Although rainfall has weakened, authorities warned that waterlogged ground is delaying the withdrawal of floodwaters. “Following the recent rains, the rivers of Brittany are at very high levels,” the national weather service said in its latest update.
Light to moderate rainfall is still forecast for Sunday across the affected areas, and officials expect the orange alert to remain in effect until Monday.
Beyond flooding, Storm Ingrid also battered the region with powerful winds. Gusts reaching up to 140 kilometers per hour were recorded on Saturday, bringing down trees and leaving two people injured.
In Quimperle, located in Finistere, the Laita River reportedly rose by four meters, causing damage to multiple businesses.
Authorities have called on residents living in vulnerable zones to stay alert, exercise caution, and comply with safety guidance as the situation continues to develop.
