France Opens First EU Consulate General in Greenland

(MENAFN) Jean-Noel Poirier assumed office on Friday as France’s consul general in Nuuk, marking France as the first European Union nation to establish a Consulate General in Greenland, according to reports.

The Foreign Ministry stated that Poirier’s arrival in Greenland officially inaugurated the French consulate in the capital. “In accordance with the announcements made by President Macron in Greenland in June 2025, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs is increasing its consular network and becomes the first European Union country to set up a consulate general in Greenland,” the statement said.

Poirier will focus on serving Greenland’s French community and strengthening existing cultural, scientific, and economic collaborations with the territory, according to reports.

The ministry emphasized that longstanding partnerships and joint projects already connect France, Denmark, and Greenland, reiterating France’s commitment to respecting Denmark’s territorial integrity.

Macron’s announcement came amid renewed interest from US President Donald Trump in American control over Greenland, citing security concerns related to Russia and China, and warning of sanctions against European nations opposing a US takeover of the Danish territory.

Trump later withdrew the threats after meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, with reports noting that a framework for a broader Arctic agreement involving Greenland was established. Discussions between the US, Denmark, and Greenland began last week to address the situation.
