Man Missing as Flooding Batters France

(MENAFN) A 53-year-old man was reported missing in western France after a small boat capsized Tuesday night, as severe weather battered the country and left four departments under the highest level of flood warning on Wednesday.

The man disappeared in Maine-et-Loire, according to a broadcaster, after his vessel overturned in flood-swollen waters. Local authorities moved quickly to deploy search resources, though officials offered little hope of a positive outcome.

"We are deploying the necessary resources, but objectively, there is very little chance of finding this person," the department's prefect said.

France's national weather service, Meteo-France, placed four departments on red alert — Charente-Maritime, Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, and Maine-et-Loire — as the storm system intensified across the country. Meteo-France characterized the ongoing conditions as "unprecedented," as the country registered its 36th consecutive day of rainfall recorded somewhere on its territory.

Minister Delegate for Ecological Transition Mathieu Lefevre, speaking to BFMTV during an on-the-ground visit to the commune of Saintes in Charente-Maritime, painted a stark picture of the crisis.

"It is an episode of exceptional magnitude in terms of its intensity. We have been under flood alert for 33 days," he said, adding that approximately 20,000 people across France remained without electricity as of early Friday.

In Saintes alone, at least 2,000 homes were reported submerged, underscoring the catastrophic scale of destruction unfolding across the region. Rescue and emergency operations remain ongoing with no immediate end to the adverse conditions in sight.
