First Round of France’s 2026 Municipal Elections Concludes
In Paris, early estimates indicated that Emmanuel Gregoire, a Socialist who served as First Deputy Mayor under Anne Hidalgo from 2018 to 2024, was leading with 36.5% of the vote. He was followed by Hidalgo’s longtime right-wing rival Rachida Dati at 24.9% and radical-left candidate Sophia Chikirou at 13.7%, according to reports.
In Marseille, initial projections suggested a tie between leftist incumbent Mayor Benoit Payan and far-right National Rally lawmaker Franck Allisio, each receiving 35.4%, while right-wing independent candidate Martine Vassal trailed with 12.3%, according to reports.
Reports note that in France, municipal council elections are conducted on party or alliance lists. A list securing 50% of the vote in the first round is declared the winner. If no list achieves this threshold, lists receiving at least 10% advance to a second round. Mayors are then elected by council members at the first municipal council meeting following the second round.
In this first round, 904,042 candidates competed across 50,478 lists nationwide. Those advancing will compete again in the second round scheduled for March 22, according to reports.
