Macron denounces violence during PSG Champions League celebrations
Welcoming PSG players to the Elysee Palace on Sunday, Macron said the unrest in Paris and other cities had overshadowed what should have been a moment of national celebration.
“Unfortunately, we witnessed unacceptable scenes of violence in Paris and other cities for much of last night,” Macron said.
“That is not football. That is not sport. That is not what we love,” he added, pledging that authorities would take a firm approach against those responsible for the disturbances.
“We do not want to see this anymore. Enough is enough. It's over,” he said.
The French president also thanked Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, Paris Police Chief Patrice Faure, and security personnel involved in restoring order.
Celebrations continued in Paris on Sunday, but tensions persisted. According to reports, clashes erupted near the Champ-de-Mars during PSG's victory parade, prompting police to use pepper spray to disperse crowds.
Additional security incidents were reported around Parc des Princes, where the club was scheduled to present the Champions League trophy to supporters. Some fans without tickets reportedly attempted to enter restricted areas before police intervened.
PSG secured its second consecutive Champions League title after defeating Arsenal in a penalty shootout on Saturday.
While the victory triggered celebrations nationwide, authorities reported disturbances in 71 cities across France. Looting incidents were recorded in approximately 15 cities, and confrontations between supporters and police occurred in Paris and several other locations.
