Macron Denounces 'Unacceptable' PSG Riot Violence
Receiving PSG players at the Élysée Palace the morning after the club clinched their second consecutive European crown, Macron said the disturbances — which spread across dozens of French cities — had cast a dark shadow over the historic win.
"Unfortunately, we witnessed unacceptable scenes of violence in Paris and other cities for much of last night," he said.
"That is not football. That is not sport. That is not what we love," he added, pledging that authorities would be "uncompromising" with those responsible.
"We do not want to see this anymore. Enough is enough. It's over," he said.
The scale of the unrest was significant. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that 457 individuals were taken into custody nationwide, while seven police officers sustained injuries — one of them seriously, in the southwestern city of Agen. Looting was reported in approximately 15 cities, and disturbances were documented across 71 cities in total.
Macron also extended his thanks to Nunez, Paris Police Chief Patrice Faure, and the broader security forces who responded to the chaos overnight.
Violence continued to simmer into Sunday. According to Le Figaro, clashes between police and supporters broke out near the Champs-de-Mars area during PSG's victory parade, with officers deploying pepper spray to disperse crowds. Further incidents were reported near the Parc des Princes stadium, where the club was set to present the Champions League trophy to fans. A number of ticketless supporters attempted to force entry through access points before police intervened.
PSG had secured the title Saturday by defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a penalty shootout — a dramatic finale that ignited celebrations nationwide, but also unleashed a wave of disorder that now threatens to overshadow one of French football's greatest nights.
